How to aerate your lawn?

If you have found that your grassland is not looking good or that water has trouble soaking through the soil surface, it might be time to aerate your lawn. The lawn aeration method may be as easy as poking holes in the soil here and there.

Aerate your lawn

Aerating can be done by aerating equipment which comes in three main types.

  • Through a solid, spike-like tine, spike aerators literally poke a hole down into the earth. When they do yard maintenance, some homeowners wear spiked aerator "sandals" strapped to their shoes to aerate. Although these can assist on a small scale, by pushing dirt together around the holes, spike devices can make compaction worse.

  • Slicing aerators, like spike aerators, leave dirt in the earth. But without creating further compaction, they create channels for sunlight, water, and nutrients.

  • Usually recommended by lawn practitioners, core or plug aerators use rows of hollow tines that eliminate soil plugs from the lawn and deposit them on top, where they break down. Depending on the device used, the dimensions of the plugs and the holes they produce differ in width and depth.

You should hire a lawn service to aerate or do it like a pro by yourself. Aerator machines are mostly licensed from equipment rental agencies.  When you work back and forth around the yard, aerating feels a lot like mowing. Concentrate on some identified conflict points, such as pet runs or baseball diamonds in the backyard. To further ensure optimum coverage and advantages, make multiple passes in various directions.
